THE BASICS: Do You Keep a Professional
File?
You know, of course, that Administrators
keep a detailed personnel file on you. But have you compiled a
personal file that's complete and up to date?
No, not that coffee-stained folder in your
desk drawer or the cardboard box in your basement. We're talking
about a professional employment file kept in a safe place, with documentation
that could counter false charges about your job performance.
A professional file, the National Education
Association - New Mexico advises its members, should contain, among
other things:
-
all signed contracts, including
extra-duty contracts
-
all other documents you sign
-
copies of all documents in your District
Personnel file (you are entitled to see and copy your file)
-
all performance evaluations and growth
plans
-
all written directives or reprimands
-
descriptions of any incidents involving
students, parents, colleagues, or administrators.
-
up-to-date transcripts of all course
work and participation in professional conferences and workshops
-
pension information
-
recommendations, awards and honors
-
work schedules for current and past
years
-
the current Association contract
with your district or other negotiated agreements (if you have
one)
-
the current employee and student
handbooks
-
all correspondence between you and
administrators
-
all correspondence with parents,
including complimentary notes
-
proof of Association membership
- a copy of the NEA Educators Employment Liability
insurance plan
