What has the National Education Association-New Mexico ever done for me?

Since its founding as the Territorial Education Association in 1886, the National Education Association of New Mexico (NEA-NM) has continuously advocated for New Mexico Public Schools and their students and employees. Since our active participation in the creation of the state’s public schools, the efforts of NEA-NM have continued to shape and improve public education in New Mexico. Every major improvement in public school law occurred by virtue of the lobbying efforts of NEA-NM. Significant among these improvements are:

  • creation of and recent revisions to the public schools funding formula,

  • creation and restoration of school employee due process protections and expansion to include educational support personnel, and

  • enactment and implementation of the collective bargaining law for education and other public employees.

Yes, But .... WHAT HAS NEA-NM DONE FOR ME LATELY?

We have been your voice in Santa Fe and have worked:

  • to gain the highest earmarked salary increase for public school employees that the state of New Mexico has ever provided,

  • to stop attempts to move public money to subsidize private schools through voucher schemes,

  • to defeat ill-conceived initiatives to dramatically move New Mexico’s public schools in the wrong direction,

  • to make sure that you have greater authority to make the decisions which improve public education through collaboration with groups like the Education Partners, the State Board of Education, the Charter School Task Force, the Educational Standards Commission, and legislative committees,

  • to gain, protect and maintain significant programs and benefits for active and retired education employees including the Educational Retirement System, Public Schools Insurance Authority and Retiree Health Care Authority programs, and

  • to elect friends of education to public office at all levels.

NEA-New Mexico has worked through the unified voice of local associations and members:

  • to provide training and consultation at the bargaining table,

  • to provide Legislative Training in partnership with the New Mexico Federation of Teachers (NMFT),

  • to provide a Fall Professional Issues Conference for all School Partners in partnership with NMFT,

  • to initiate and conduct a joint Summer Leadership Conference and joint ESP Conference with the NMFT,

  • to provide local/regional training in employee rights and education issues, and

  • to provide legal protection to protect members’ jobs in locals across the state.

  • to initiate and conduct a joint Summer Leadership Conference and joint ESP Conference with the NMFT,

  • to provide local/regional training in employee rights and education issues, and

  • to provide legal protection to protect members’ jobs in locals across the state.

So .... WHY DOES NEA-NM NEED ME?

NEA-NM provides members an Effective Voice on all issues important to school employees. We are a volunteer-based organization supported by a network of professional and support staff. More members will enable us to continue Collective Action to Protect the Rights of School Employees. NEA-NM provides members Active Communication across the state, with offices located at NEA-NM Headquarters in Santa Fe and four field offices in Albuquerque, Farmington, Roswell, and Las Cruces.

To accomplish even more, we need YOU as a member of NEA-New Mexico and your local Association!
